Thirty years of other people's electricity bills.

PMT has been metering South African utilities, retailers, property funds and heavy industry since 1994 — long enough that the first systems we installed have been replaced by our own second and third generations.

Metering is a business where the reference that matters is the one still running after a decade. Below is where the work has actually gone.

Lost in 2020. Won back in 2025.

PMT read the electricity meters of the City of Ekurhuleni's large power users for about twenty years, up to 2020, when the contract went elsewhere.

In 2025 the city awarded it back to us — roughly 15 000 meters, on a metropolitan estate where the readings settle the accounts of the largest electricity consumers in the municipality. Being re-appointed after five years away is a harder reference than never having lost it.

How it accumulated

  1. 1992–95

PMT incorporated. Power-Link test benches developed and sold to the City of Durban, Pretoria and Eskom. The calibration laboratory is accredited by SANAS. Contracts follow to refurbish and calibrate 10 000 single-phase meters for Durban, and to calibrate every single-phase meter Eskom purchases.

  2. 1996–97

20 000 meters refurbished for the City of Pretoria. PMT becomes the South African distributor for Schlumberger UK. Test equipment is exported to Western Australia, India, Malaysia, the Philippines and Switzerland.

  3. 1998–99

The first automatic meter reading system in a South African retail centre, running on Meteringonline. Deployed at Montecasino, Sandton Convention Centre and Rosebank Mall.

  4. 2000–02

Meteringonline at Canal Walk, with more than 1 000 metering points. Meter-testing facilities supplied to the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Commission. More than 200 000 Power-Link meters into South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Angola.

  5. 2003–04

Meteringonline adopted as the AMR platform for 6 000 large power users at the City of Ekurhuleni. 30 000 multifunction meters supplied to TNB Malaysia. Bespoke GSM meter-data terminals designed in-house.

  6. 2005–06

AMR for 10 000 large power users at City Power Johannesburg. The Cape Town office opens. Meteringonline is rolled out across every Pick n Pay and Woolworths store in South Africa. First GPRS-based acquisition system.

  7. 2007–10

PMT becomes an EDMI distributor and the first true smart metering system in a South African shopping mall goes live.

  8. 2011–13

Prepaymentonline launched. Meteringonline installed in the United Kingdom, Namibia, Zambia, Australia, Botswana and Mauritius. Smart metering across every Virgin Active club in South Africa, and a Barclays Africa contract covering nine African countries.

  9. 2014–15

A five-year Pick n Pay contract across all retail outlets and food distribution centres nationally. The IoT meter data acquisition system is developed, along with an IoT load-control relay for automated demand response. Richard's Bay Municipality appoints PMT as its metering service provider.

  10. 2016–24

Meteringonline extended into Mauritius and Uganda. Billing gains the ability to separate local generation from utility supply — the software answer to load-shedding and embedded generation. IoT systems add automatic alarming for power interruptions.

  11. 2025

PMT is re-awarded the contract to read the electricity meters of the City of Ekurhuleni's large power users — roughly 15 000 meters — having previously held it for about twenty years to 2020.
